It’s official. The highly anticipated Victoria Public Market has opened it’s gigantic doors. The huge, rustic space is reminiscent of Vancouver’s Granville Island and even Seattle’s Pike Place Market, but there’s one thing that makes it better – it’s ours.
Right smack dab the heart of downtown and offering all four food groups and more, the permanent market is truly a one stop shop. With many vendors already up and running and several still to come, the market has something for everyone. Among the open vendors are familiar favourites Salt Spring Island Cheese, Silk Road Tea, Island Spice Trade, and Olive the Senses. Joining them are Pie Co., an aptly name pie shop; Roast, a gourmet sandwich shop for meat lovers; Sutra, the newest addition to the famous Vij’s family; and The French Oven, a (you guessed it) French bakery. Still to come are a cake shop, a Mexican kitchen, a green grocer, and Cowichan Bay Seafood. And as if a bounty of local vendors isn’t enough, the market boasts a Community Kitchen, a place for guest chefs to demonstrate their culinary prowess to us amateurs. As the days get colder and much, much wetter, we can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend.
